Winning the game

Territory & scoring

pinch or use +/− · double-tap board
Black to move 27 18Black leads by 9

Empty points sealed by a single colour are tinted as that colour's territory; the neutral middle counts for no one. The scoreline updates live — play a few stones to seal the centre for one side and watch the lead swing.

You don't win by capturing the most stones — you win by surrounding the most empty space. An empty region bordered only by your stones is your territory.

Here black's wall seals the left (27points) and white's seals the right (18). The columns between the walls touch bothcolours, so they're neutral and count for no one.

Final score

Score = territory + captured stones. The board reads out the territory live and names who's ahead — here Black leads 27 to 18. Add the stones you captured during the game to each side, and whoever has more wins.

That's the whole game: place stones, capture what can't breathe, and use the threat of capture to wall off territory. You now know enough to play your first game.
